Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is often a predictor for future academic and life success. Third graders make the leap from “learning to read” to "reading to learn" -- to gain information and think critically in all other subject areas. While reading proficiency remains an important indicator to observe, new school standards in North Dakota assess a comprehensive English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy score which includes the assessment of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and research/inquiry skills. These skills build on each other in successive grades to ensure students are prepared for college and career.
