Voting is a right in a democracy. It offers people the means to elect representatives and to influence policy to best meet their needs, and those of their families and communities. Voter turnout is defined as the percentage of eligible voters who cast a ballot in an election. Increased civic education in schools and with the public will encourage voter turnout and contribute to the development of an informed, effective, and responsible citizenry.
