Race

The lack of understanding about individuals, groups, and communities different from one's own can create incomplete and/or inaccurate representations of those individuals and communities. By understanding the racial and ethnic composition of a population, community leaders can benefit from each group's strengths and perspectives. In addition, having accurate knowledge can help leaders overcome and/or prevent racial and ethnic divisions within a community. Race and ethnicity also have influence on health care. There is evidence of various racial and ethnic groups having increased risk factors for a variety of diseases. Therefore, being culturally competent can help improve the health care of the population by improving the effectiveness of delivery and uptake of health care services.
